In 1609 a Japanese warlord invaded Okinawa, placed it under Japanese rule, and banned the use of all weapons.
Thus karate was developed as a deadly weapon, a disciplined martial art, it was not introduced into Japan as a sport until 1916.
In karate part 1 Steve Powell introduces you to the skills of karate before it became a sport. and on this videotape demonstrates exercises and moves of attack and defence to help you to improve these skills.
STEVE POWELL is a 5th Dan blackbelt karate expert, chief instructor to ‘Chosin-Kai-Martial Arts International' and weapons master with world-wide clubs.
He has had nearly 20 years experience in the field and now heads his own Association of Martial Arts, is involved in the film industry as a stunt-man, actor and fight co-ordinator and is the author of 3 books.

This tape is intended for use alongside practical professional lessons and serves as an introduction to the art. The skill of karate can be lethal and should never used except in a controlled and disciplined situation.
