World famous rhythm and blues singer Liz Weatherly (Leslie Uggams) sets out alone on a rural holiday. When her Rolls Bentley breaks down on a lonely country road, she walks to Bertha's Oasis, a desolate rundown motel where her first sight is hulking, knife-scarred handyman Keno (Ted Cassidy). In the main lodge, she is greeted by an intense young man who introduces himself as Eddie Collins (Michael Christian). Eddie serves as bellhop and bartender at the ramshackle resort, and is also the boyfriend of its owner, buxom, alcoholic ex-nightclub performer Bertha (Shelly Winters). Eddie sends Keno to tow Liz' [sic] car to the motel. Meanwhile, he escorts the singer to the "best room in the house.' [sic] Discovering Liz' [sic] identity, he reveals that he, too, is an entertainer - a potential country and western star. He promises that if Liz pushes his career, he will satisfy her romantically...
