Synopsis

It is the early fifties, Janet [Bonnie Bedelia] and John Thatcher [Martin Sheen] have a daughter - Janet dies of cancer. 19 years later Miranda [Kitty Winn] is now a teenager, turned off by her father, stepmother [Jan Shutan] and society in general. After a car accident in which Miranda narrowly escapes death, her father gives her the cassette tapes her real mother had recorded for her 18 years before when she knew she dying. From the tapes Miranda learns of her mother's idyllic life with her father in their last weeks together. She offers Miranda loving advice and relates her hopes and fears for the future.
