Synopsis

The ship: the 'Sea Wolf', a most hated sailing vessel in the late 19th century. The captain of the ship is Wolf Larsen (Chuck Connors), a harsh and brutal man, feared by all the sailors who have ever suffered the misfortune of serving under him. Among the shanghaied crew is Humphrey Van Weyden (Hump), who is not a sailor but an educated gentleman writer unaccustomed to manual labor. Almost immediately, Hump is in conflict with Wolf Larsen, who despises any weakness of the mind or body. Larsen assigns Hump to serve as the cook's assistant, a menial job that is a boy's work, not a man's. The cook bullies Hump unmercifully until one day Hump asserts himself and clubs the cook. This violent act of self-preservation gains Hump the approval of Wolf Larsen. The two men, who are totally opposite, become friends of a sort. Hump discovers that, in spite of his brutality, Larsen is well educated. He also discovers that from time to time Wolf Larsen suffers from seizures and blackouts, which render him helpless.
