Synopsis

The year is 1901. Englishman Arthur Davies is enjoying a single-handed sailing holiday through the islands of the North Sea coast of Germany. A fateful encounter with a mysterious German yachtsman and his beautiful daughter (played by Jenny Agutter) arouses Davies' suspicions, and following an attempt on his life he summonses his Foreign Office friend Carruthers (Michael York) and together they set out to solve the Riddle of the Sands. Is the mysterious German a spy? A double-agent? Is he searching for treasure? Why have German troops arrived in the nearby port? This rivetting [sic] film version of the famous Erskine Childers novel sustains the suspense all the way to its thrilling climax.
