Synopsis

They challenged the Devil... and won!
A daring and hazardous mission behind German lines is assigned to British Army Colonel MacPherson, to pave the way for commando raids just prior to the invasion of Normandy. His unwilling volunteers are a handful of hostile Army convicts. When the commandos are destroyed by the Germans, Colonel MacPherson coerces his convicts into carrying out the commandos [sic] mission; that is the destruction of a huge railroad cannon at Ango. To accomplish this task, a beautiful French girl becomes the innocent pawn in the long-running private war between MacPherson and the German Colonel Ackerman. A series of suspenseful chess-like manoeuvres between the two men ensues and is climaxed explosively with the success of the mission and concluded by that inevitable moment in a man's life when he must meet his own enemy face to face.
