An older woman and a younger man, a love story of our time
Elizabeth Taylor stars as Emily Loomis, a divorcee, ex-show biz performer and now a professor teaching history. Emily refuses all invitations to meet eligible men, and instead finds herself intrigued by a withdrawn student, Stewart Anderman (Joseph Bottoms). Stewart rents a room from her and the two enjoy a rocky relationship which virtually collapses when Stewart accuses Emily of disliking him. He offers to move out, telling her she is a machine and not a woman.
