At the dose of the Second world War a displaced person marries an Italian soldier who takes her back to his primitive island home of Stromboli. The community is suspicious of outsiders and regards her free ways as contrary to the traditional ways of women. She appeals to the local priest to help her get off the island and when he refuses she climbs the volcanic slope.
